The leak occurred just as Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis was promoting the agency’s creation, which is tasked with tackling organised crime. Despite the minister’s celebratory statements, the leak has already exposed personal data of the officers involved, posing a potential threat to their safety.

Greek police spokesperson Constantia Dimoglidou responded to the incident, saying: “This specific order reached many agencies, and we will investigate the source of the leak.” She stressed the risks associated with the public exposure of the officers’ identities, highlighting the potential danger to their lives.

The website that published the details, Law & Order, has since taken down the information, but the incident has raised alarms about the security of Greece’s police force. The Athens Police Officers Union (ESAYA) condemned the leak in a statement, asserting that it doesn’t matter whether the publication was a mistake or deliberate, the consequences are severe. “The exact details of police officers from a newly established service, which will play a key role in combating crime, were made accessible to everyone,” EASYA said.

The union, along with its legal department, is preparing to take legal action to protect its members. They also expressed frustration at the lack of response from police leadership, calling the silence “negative and painful.”

The Union of Officers of the Greek Armed Forces Attica also weighed in, questioning the reasoning behind publishing “exclusive” information, given the potential consequences for police investigations and the safety of their colleagues. The incident is being investigated, but it has cast a shadow over the launch of the much-anticipated agency.
