The Spartans party, linked to convicted Golden Dawn member Ilias Kasidiaris, has reportedly received approximately €85,000 in electoral funding. Since 2023, its regular state funding has amounted to nearly €1.5 million.
Expanded legal framework
The amendment builds on existing legislation used to cut state funding to Golden Dawn, the neo-Nazi organisation whose leadership was convicted of running a criminal organisation. The new provisions broaden the criteria to include any party led, de facto or otherwise, by an individual facing prosecution or under pretrial detention for serious offences, such as directing a criminal organisation.
The Supreme Court has determined that the Spartans are under the leadership of Kasidiaris, who is currently serving a prison sentence for his role in the Golden Dawn criminal organisation.
