Greek opposition condemns Israel’s seizure of Gaza aid boat and Mitsotakis’ government silence

SYRIZA: “Another piece in the tragic puzzle unfolding in the Middle East”
SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Socrates Famellos strongly condemned Israel’s interception of the Madleen, a humanitarian aid boat bound for Gaza, accusing the Greek government of “complicit silence.” In a Facebook post, Famellos called the intervention “another piece in the tragic puzzle unfolding in the Middle East,” stressing that the vessel posed no threat but was “an act of necessary solidarity” met with “weapons and authoritarianism.”
Famellos reiterated that “solidarity and humanism are not terrorism” and criticised Greek government for failing to act. He outlined four proposals: an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, a Greece-Cyprus-Egypt humanitarian corridor under EU auspices, an EU-Mediterranean conference on Palestine, and a push for a two-state solution based on 1967 borders.
New Left: “Break the silence, stand with Palestine”
New Left president Alexis Haritsis denounced the attack as “yet another criminal act by Netanyahu’s government,” warning that activists aboard the Madleen were now “in the hands of a murderous state.” He defended the passengers, stating they were “not criminals but people delivering aid to a suffering population.” Haritsis urged international solidarity efforts to “break the Greek government’s guilty silence” and Israel’s “propaganda wall.”
Greek Communist Party (KKE): “Israel’s genocide backed by NATO”
The KKE condemned the seizure as “unacceptable,” accusing Israel of genocide with the backing of the US, NATO, and the EU. It lambasted the Greek government for maintaining military ties with Israel, calling it a “terrorist state,” and demanded an end to all cooperation.
MeRA25 and Popular Unity: Calls for protests
MeRA25 labelled the interception “piracy in international waters” and demanded the release of the 12 detained activists, while slamming Greece’s “deafening silence.” The party urged the government – currently presiding over the UN Security Council – to ensure the safety of 200 Greeks joining the “March to Gaza.” A protest was called for outside the Israeli Embassy in Athens.
Popular Unity similarly condemned the raid as a “Zionist occupation state’s brutality,” blaming NATO-backed impunity. It demanded Greece sever all ties with Israel and join a rally supporting Gaza.
