Greek PM claims it is the opposition and media that cover-up the truth about Tempe

Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis took a confrontational tone during a meeting of the ruling New Democracy party’s parliamentary group, accusing both the opposition and certain media outlets of deliberately covering up the truth about the Tempe train disaster.
“It’s no secret that this meeting comes at the end of a difficult chapter in our domestic political scene,” Mitsotakis said. “A period dominated by the public outcry over the Tempe tragedy.”
He went on to claim: “Opposition propaganda and some sections of the media have sown confusion among the public. Now it’s time for the truth to strike back.” His remarks come despite recent mass protests accusing the government itself of trying to cover up its responsibility for the deadly incident.
“As more information comes to light,” Mitsotakis continued, “it becomes increasingly clear that there was a coordinated attempt to obscure the truth and manipulate public opinion around an issue that is deeply emotional. They tried to exploit human suffering for short-term political gain. The time for justice is approaching.”
He also warned that “conspiracy theories can take root and influence public perception.”
On the topic of future elections, the PM reaffirmed his intention to serve his full term:
“The next election will be held at the end of the four-year term, in 2027, and we will win – with me at the forefront. I believe we can even increase our number of MPs, as long as we stay united and confident. That’s what the country needs: stable leadership in this unpredictable world.”
He stressed the need for unity within the party and discipline in government:
“It’s our duty to refute the slander coming from the opposition with facts. We must respond with reason to their constant negativity. We need to speak with one voice. No minister should treat their department as their own personal kingdom, and no MP should put personal ambition above the values and symbol of our party. Our programme and our principles come first – individual aspirations come second.”
He acknowledged that internal disagreements are natural but added, “There’s a difference between a differing opinion and dysfunctional introversion. The latter is unacceptable.”
He also signalled potential changes in his cabinet: “The composition of the Cabinet will not remain static. Our victory at the next election is well within reach – but we need everyone pulling in the same direction.”
Calling for the party to move past “hesitation and uncertainty”, Mitsotakis added, addressing his MPs:
“It’s natural for everyone to have ambitions, but there are only so many positions in the Cabinet.”
