Protest against illegal detentions

Ms. Paparoussou explained that she had protested the “illegal arrests” of around 30 individuals who were en route to join the demonstration, accusing the police of targeting them without cause. “The arrest regime is not described in the Code of Criminal Procedure, meaning it has no legal basis,” she stated.

She further alleged that her arrest was triggered by her objections as a lawyer to what she described as “the illegal arrest-kidnapping” of protesters. “This preventive arrest system is absolutely illegal, as has been reported many times, but it is now carried out with increasing frequency and intensity,” she added.

The lawyer also accused police of using physical violence during her arrest.

Police actions and accusations

The Community of Occupied Refugees corroborated reports of police violence, stating that officers attacked Ms. Paparoussou while arbitrarily detaining demonstrators. The group reported that police surrounded protesters near the intersection of Asklipiou and Fanariotes streets before transferring them to Petrou Ralli detention center.

“The Community of Occupied Refugees was heading to the march when they were surrounded by Immediate Action Unit squads and additional police forces without cause,” the group stated. They accused the government of escalating repression, linking the arrests to ongoing harassment following the collapse of charges in a separate case involving refugees.

Journalist Christos Avramidis also reported on Ms. Paparoussou’s detention, claiming she was targeted after attempting to defend citizens against the “illegal practice of preventive arrests.”

Broader concerns about state repression

Ms. Paparoussou’s arrest highlights growing concerns over the use of preventive detentions in Greece, particularly during politically sensitive events. Critics argue that such practices, which lack a clear legal framework, are being deployed to suppress dissent and intimidate activists.

“This is part of the wider crackdown on activists and the use of repressive tactics to stifle public demonstrations,” stated the Community of Occupied Refugees.

As the fallout from the incident continues, activists and legal professionals are calling for greater accountability and an end to what they describe as systematic abuses by law enforcement.
