The fire, which broke out at the Motor Oil refinery in Agioi Theodoroi on September 17, 2024, followed an accident, highlighting the risks inherent to the fossil fuel industry. “From oil spills to refinery fires, this sector is a ticking time bomb,” Greenpeace noted. “It contributes to extreme weather events and places workers, as well as local communities, in immediate danger.”
“As the world faces the mounting consequences of climate change – from devastating wildfires to record-breaking heatwaves – incidents like this serve as a wake-up call. Our dependence on fossil fuels must end, and we need to transition urgently to cleaner, safer, renewable energy sources. This is not just an environmental necessity; it’s about protecting the health, lives, and future of everyone,” the environmental group continued.
Greenpeace reaffirmed its call for swift and decisive climate action. “The continued use of fossil fuels is reckless. Greece, along with the rest of the world, must transition to 100% renewable energy in a socially and environmentally just manner to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.”
