The most recent fatality was a 45-year-old man who had been vacationing in Ancient Olympia. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Patras Hospital after initially being treated at Pyrgos Hospital. According to Spyros Politis, the director of Pyrgos Hospital, the man arrived in critical condition on Saturday, and despite being transferred to Patras for specialised care, he succumbed to septic shock a few hours later. ERT reports that a third patient with a similar clinical presentation is currently hospitalised in Patras, though their condition is reported to be stable.
The first known case involved a man from Livadia who was vacationing in Katakolo. His death was initially attributed to a brown spider bite, but forensic analysis later confirmed that streptococcus was the actual cause. Angeliki Tsiola, head of the Forensic Service of Patras, reported that while the spider bite was not incidental—evidenced by two bite marks on his leg—it is possible that the insect or rodent that bit him transmitted the streptococcus bacteria.
Following these deaths, the EODY team has been urgently deployed to Ilia to conduct further investigations. Their efforts include random blood sampling from patients at Pyrgos Hospital to identify any additional cases and assess the spread of the infection.
