In an interview with KRITI TV, Salmas denounced what he described as deep-rooted problems in the health system, speaking of illegal recruitments and opaque contract awards for medical and pharmaceutical equipment. Referring to the management of European funds, he claimed that around €2bn had been channelled through a voucher system that favoured the private sector at the expense of the public health system. ‘Not even 5% has come to light,’ he said.
He said: ‘I know exactly what happens in hospitals. And how jobs/tenders are awarded. So he, Mr Georgiadis, has to be more careful. Because sometimes the case files may also concern health. That’s all. As for what I said, bear in mind that he will not answer me.’
Georgiadis replied: ‘Everyone has investigated me. I don’t have a stain on my sword. I respect the fact that he was elected as a New Democracy MP. In court he will be called upon to prove what he says. Mr Salmas made an extremely offensive claim about my moral integrity. Because I do not wish to have a public confrontation with him, given that he was a New Democracy MP, I would prefer this kind of dispute to go to court.’
