Any non-Greek speaker interested in staying updated with news from Greece has to rely exclusively on mainstream media. While foreign readers may not be familiar with this, those acquainted with the media environment in Greece can attest that these sources often feature deeply biased pro-government reporting, fostering a skewed narrative that diverges significantly from reality. This conclusion was further solidified by our country’s decline in the international press freedom ranking, where we now rank 108th globally, marking us as the lowest-ranked among European Union nations.

In today’s climate, news about critical issues such as unrestrained neoliberal policies, the privatisation of higher education and healthcare, the unpunished crimes of gender-based violence against women or LGBTQI individuals, the persistent impunity for police violence, and the systematic state policy of forced refugee pushbacks, as evidenced by the Pylos tragedy, remain on the sidelines. Furthermore, immigrants and refugees continue to endure punitive living conditions. The optimism the establishment promotes surrounding the country’s economic development frequently overshadows these pressing matters.
These are the issues we address daily.
There is a significant absence of unbiased news coverage in English that could provide an independent, progressive perspective on current events in Greece.
ThePressProject initially maintained an English-language version, which was highly active during the height of the financial crisis that thrust Greece into the global spotlight. However, this page has since fallen into disuse.
Today, we strongly sense the demand for an unbiased, progressive, and globally oriented viewpoint, which we believe will resonate with a large audience. These readers are acutely aware of the inherent bias in mainstream media but struggle to find alternative sources that offer a more holistic perspective.

Currently, individuals informed by the mainstream press hold such starkly contrasting views of our country that it feels as though we inhabit parallel universes.
In all of this, it’s crucial to have a voice aligned with the public interest—one that amplifies the voices of the underprivileged and facilitates access to news about Greece in English for progressive readers, activists, journalists, and academics abroad.
