The mayor of Thessaloniki was mocked over the weekend for the measures taken to protect roads from heavy snowfall as footage broadcast on Skai TV shows municipal crews using minimal amounts of salt to clear ice-covered roads, not to mention throwing it by hand. Clearly, sun-baked and debt-stricken Greece is not ready for winter prime-time. At the same time, somewhere, some reform bigot must be pointing at the screen and saying “look at the inefficiencies of the Greek public sector!” And this might be one of the times we'd agree.
