In April, inflation had stood at 5.4%, while in May 2025 it had been significantly lower, at 2.5%.
The largest increases were recorded in food, energy and services. On an annual basis, price rises were observed mainly in three categories: food, energy and services.
In food and drink, veal prices increased by 17.6%, lamb and goat by 16.2%, salted fish by 12.6%, margarine and vegetable fats by 10.6%, poultry by 6%, coffee by 5.2%, cold cuts by 4.9%, meat preparations by 4.5%, vegetables by 4.1%, fruit by 3.5%, dairy products and eggs by 2.7%, sugar, chocolate, sweets and ice cream by 2%, and pork by 1.7%.
In housing and energy, heating oil rose by 53.2%, other fuels by 34.8%, diesel by 24.4%, petrol by 21.5%, natural gas by 21%, housing rents by 7.7%, home repair and maintenance by 6.8%, electricity by 5.9% and solid fuels by 2.6%.
In transport, tourism and hospitality, passenger air transport rose by 19.2%, jewellery and watches by 16.2%, hotels, motels and inns by 9.5%, restaurants, pastry shops, fast food outlets and canteens by 8.5%, health insurance premiums by 7% and package holidays by 5.9%.
Compared with April, price decreases were recorded in other fuels, down 10.8%; natural gas, down 9.2%; diesel, down 8.5%; and passenger air transport, down 12%.
However, price increases were still recorded in hotels, motels and inns, up 11%; restaurants and similar establishments, up 2.4%; petrol, up 2.3%; electricity, up 0.7%; and housing rents, up 0.6%.
Harmonised inflation, measured according to European standards, stood at 4.9% year on year, compared with 3.3% in May 2025. On a monthly basis, it increased by 0.6%.
The general consumer price index showed no change in May compared with April, while in the corresponding comparison last year it had increased by 0.2%.
