The regional council of the Ionian islands proposed to hold referendum over the government's plans to privatize the country's airports.
Among the fourteen airports to be sold, three are located on the popular holiday islands of Corfu, Cephalonia and Zakynthos and one on Aktion that connects mainland Greece to the island of Lefkada. Those airports are directly related to the socio-economic life of the residents.
The Provincial Governor of the Ionian Islands, Theodoros Galiatsatos, characterised the decision over the concession of 14 regional airport to the German consortium of Fraport “a particularly negative development for the Ionian islands”.
The regional council has agreed to organize a referendum following the September 20 general elections. The council also agreed to take the case to court in order to annul the government's decision.
