The seasonal firefighters highlighted that there are currently 3,500 vacant positions within the Fire Department, and argued that these should be filled by the 2,500 seasonal firefighters who have been on the front lines for years. According to a statement from SYRIZA, they pointed out that despite six years of dedicated service, including battling numerous fires, the state has not provided them with the opportunity to secure permanent positions. “They don’t even give us the right to apply for these roles,” one firefighter remarked.

The firefighters stressed that, after years of risking their lives in hazardous conditions, gaining permanent status is not just about job security—it’s about recognising and justifying the immense effort and sacrifice they have made.

Kasselakis responded by criticising the government’s treatment of these workers. “What is being done, in my opinion, behind your backs, is exploitation,” he stated. “When they need you, they pay you 950 euros for six months and rely on your goodwill and moral commitment to keep going.”
