In a statement, the party criticised what it called ‘racist rhetoric, nationalist slogans, the glorification of the dictator Metaxas and his corresponding fascist organisation EON’, together with ‘necessary anti-communism’, adding that these elements ‘have nothing to do with the history and struggles of our people, especially in a year that marked 80 years since the anti-fascist victory of the peoples’.
The KKE described the presence of EON as ‘an insult to the memory of the hundreds of thousands of Greeks who fought for the salvation of our people, for the defeat of the Nazi occupiers and their domestic collaborators, on the war fronts, in the cities and villages, on the outlying islands, under the Metaxas dictatorship and in the execution squads’. ‘History, unfortunately for them, is not rewritten,’ the statement said.
The party warned that, ‘especially in conditions of war involvement and preparation, the use of nationalist organisations as useful reserves for the system must find a response’ in the form of their political isolation by the workers’ and people’s movement.
The KKE also cited social-media posts by the nationalist group on the day of the parade, in which EON members hailed the event and praised Ioannis Metaxas, even referring to him as ‘nation leader’.
