“The death of a migrant by the fire of the Hellenic Coast Guard off Symi must be fully investigated, and all responsibilities must be assigned,” the statement reads. “The attempt to present it as a ‘collateral loss of an operational episode in the war against traffickers’ is unacceptable, particularly when there were minor children on board.”

The KKE emphasised that this incident is not an isolated case but rather a result of the EU’s “wild and barbaric” policies towards displaced migrants and refugees. These policies, the statement argues, have been further exacerbated by the new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, which provides fertile ground for criminal trafficking rings to operate.

“The only answer is to fight against the brutality of wars and displacement, and to protect migrants and refugees in direct opposition to the policies of the EU and the Greek government,” the KKE concluded.
