Prisoners across Greece have expressed solidarity with the families of the Tempe victims and those set to demonstrate on Friday, 28 February, marking the two-year anniversary of the deadliest rail disaster in Greece’s history.
In a joint statement, prisoners from multiple correctional facilities announced their decision to refuse the midday lockdown as a symbolic act of protest against what they describe as systemic injustice and a cover-up of the crime.
Full statement from the prisoners:
“We, the prisoners of Greek prisons, join our voices with those of the relatives of the Tempe victims and the people taking to the streets to demand justice for the unjustly lost souls of Tempe. We refuse the noon lockdown as a message of sympathy and support.
We know firsthand what Greek justice means—cover-ups, police and judicial arbitrariness.
We stand with the families of the victims and against the cover-up of the crime by the political system, the police, the judiciary, and the media.
No to the cover-up – Justice for the 57 dead of Tempe.“
The statement was issued from prisoners in the following correctional facilities:
- Korydallos
- Central Prison Material Depot (KAYF)
- Malandrino
- Trikala
- Domokos
- Nigrita Serres
- Patras
- Amfissa
- Nafplio
- Avlona
- Korydallos Prisoners Psychiatric Hospital
- Ioannina
