Chatzis has made clear that he does not intend to end his hunger strike until the demands in defence of the residents of Prosfygika are met.
The full statement by the medical team monitoring Aristotelis Chatzis reads:
‘Hunger striker Aristotelis Chatzis, who is on the 82nd day of his hunger strike, has low serum urea levels, hyperuricaemia and symptomatic hypoglycaemia, findings consistent with starvation. Clinically, he has established numbness in the extremities and sluggish tendon reflexes due to malnutrition and muscle atrophy, while he has already had a fainting episode on 3 April 2026.
‘Since the first weeks of the hunger strike, he has been experiencing increasingly worsening episodes of orthostatic hypotension, malaise with fatigue and tachycardia upon standing. These episodes have worsened, now greatly affecting his functionality, combined with sleep disturbances. In addition, persistent electrocardiographic abnormalities that predispose him to fatal arrhythmias are observed daily.
‘He now experiences daily hypoglycaemic episodes, while on Wednesday 15 April he required medical intervention to prevent a serious hypoglycaemic episode.
‘He is already on the 82nd day of his hunger strike and is emaciated, weighing 45.9kg and having lost a total of 29.3% of his initial body weight. Due to the duration of the hunger strike, we warn of the risk of imminent irreversible damage to vital organs.
‘With every 24 hours that pass, the hunger striker faces an ever-increasing cardiovascular and metabolic risk, with dangerous and imminent life-threatening complications.
‘His demands express the collective demands of the community.
‘Immediate cancellation of the contract by the Attica Region.
‘All refugee residents must remain in their homes, in the place and area where they reside and with which they are socially, culturally and organically connected.
‘Concrete guarantees must be given for the rehabilitation of the refugees by the urban non-profit company under the name “Residents and Friends of Prosfygika, Alexandras Avenue AMKE”, with its own funding. Not a euro of public money for the “rehabilitation” of the refugees.
‘The hunger striker states that he does not intend to stop abstaining from food, despite the risks to his health, until the demands are met.
‘After 82 days of hunger strike, and given the constantly escalating deterioration of his health, responsibility for any complication or even fatal outcome lies with the parties involved in the contract, chiefly the Attica Region. The cover-up of the hunger strike by the majority of the media, as well as the criminal silence of the government, parliamentary political forces and competent bodies, are complicit in pushing the hunger striker towards death.
‘The proposal and decision of the municipal council on 20 April to investigate the legality of safeguarding the interests of the Municipality of Athens and to consult with the residents until the completion of this process condemns the hunger striker to death through unclear and time-consuming procedures. At the same time, the statements by Nikos Hardalias about “plenty of time” for consultation and finding a solution deliberately ignore the fact that a person is already on an advanced hunger strike and his life is in danger.
‘As health workers, we demand that the Regional Council meeting on Monday 27 April include the issue of Prosfygika on the agenda and decide to revoke the contract that paves the way for the repression, evacuation and “redevelopment” of Prosfygika, taking into account the warnings regarding the health condition of hunger striker Aristotelis Chatzis.
