In its statement, Mera25 United Left argues that ‘the White House has effectively fired the US ambassador to Athens, essentially confirming reports in the American press that Guilfoyle had overly close ties to business interests and promoted specific deals’.
The party focuses particularly on the Aktor group, which it links to plans involving American LNG and the Vertical Corridor.
‘Among the business interests with which Guilfoyle had dealings is, would you believe it, the Aktor group, one of the key players in the plans for American LNG and the infamous Vertical Corridor’, the statement reads.
‘The real scandal, however, goes beyond individuals’, the party argues, accusing the government of locking Greece into an ‘extremely costly and geopolitically dangerous dependency’ while presenting it as a national necessity.
Mera25 also highlights what it considers a contradiction in the Greek government’s position on American LNG, pointing to Donald Trump’s negotiations with Vladimir Putin over Russian diesel.
The party concludes by demanding full disclosure of all LNG agreements and calling for the dismantling of the extractive energy axis and a fundamental shift in Greece’s energy and geopolitical orientation.
The statement in full
It’s a real shame that just as Kimberly Guilfoyle was beginning to feel at home in Greece, wondering where to put the furniture and whom to appoint to the government, Washington decided to cut short her stay.
The White House has effectively fired the US ambassador to Athens, essentially confirming reports in the American press that Guilfoyle had overly close ties to business interests and promoted specific deals.
Among the business interests with which Guilfoyle had dealings is, would you believe it, the Aktor group, one of the key players in the plans for American LNG and the infamous Vertical Corridor.
And so the great energy success story of the Mitsotakis government is taking an unexpected turn. After the celebratory photos, the bows and the assurances of ‘geopolitical upgrading’, come allegations of business horse-trading.
Some particularly malicious people might suggest that Aktor’s involvement explains why the Greek media have not said a word about the American reports concerning the ambassador.
The real scandal, however, goes beyond individuals. The government has aligned the country’s energy strategy with the priorities of Washington and Israel and with the interests of a handful of business groups. It has locked Greece into an extremely costly and geopolitically dangerous dependency, which it presents as a national destiny.
And the irony is striking: while Trump negotiates with Putin over Russian diesel, the Mitsotakis government continues to treat American LNG as a sacred national duty.
As Mera25 United Left, we demand full disclosure of everything concerning the actual LNG agreements and call for the dismantling of the extractive energy axis, an end to dependence on American-Israeli interests and a shift towards a policy of peace and cooperation in the Mediterranean.
