"This global trade war, which is now kicking off, won’t benefit anyone; it will harm everyone. I hope and wish that we can soon move towards de-escalation of these protectionist practices," said PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Kozani, commenting on the new tariffs that US President Donald Trump plans to impose on dozens of countries.

He pointed out that Trump’s decisions mark “a historic shift towards protectionism, and a sharp change in the way the global economic system has worked for decades. It also represents a departure from the way the European Union has understood economic and social progress since its creation.”

“We have always been a country that supports free trade, and I firmly believe that this global trade war, which is now starting, won’t benefit anyone; it will harm everyone. I hope and wish that we can soon move towards de-escalation of these protectionist practices,” he added.

He also mentioned that “Greece will play a leading role within the European Union. This is where the decisions will be made on how we respond to this unprecedented move.”

Reassuring the public, he reiterated Greece’s fiscal stability, saying, “I want to assure you that, with careful planning and responsibility, the Greek economy will be able to face these challenges. I’ve raised this issue to show just how uncertain the international economic and geopolitical landscape is, and how crucial political stability is in our country right now. This government is committed to guiding Greece through these extremely turbulent times.”
