Mitsotakis: Modern security forces needed to strengthen the rule of law

In his weekly review, Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis outlined major changes to Greece’s police structure as part of his push for stronger law enforcement, alongside a commitment to higher defense investments.
European defence
“The White Paper, the EU’s plan to enhance its defense shielding and autonomy, includes long-standing Greek positions, which will now become EU policy. I am referring to the possibility of granting fiscal flexibility to member states so they can increase defense investments, as well as the creation of a common European fund worth 150 billion euros to finance part of these expenses. This fund will be accessible only to countries that either participate in the EU or have strategic partnership agreements with it. We must be even more ambitious and bold on this issue. Europe’s defense depends on us, and Greece is at the forefront of related initiatives.”
Greek PM announces a radical reform for the restructuring of Greece’s police force
The Prime Minister stressed the need for more modern security forces to achieve tangible results in upholding the rule of law. He praised the efforts of the newly-established Anti-Organised Crime Directorate, which, as he claimed, in less than six months has solved 272 cases and dismantled 51 criminal organisations.
“This reform addresses the pressing need for a modern, radically upgraded internal security system capable of responding to the new major and complex challenges of both petty and organized crime.”
“We need more modern Security Forces to achieve tangible results in the fight for the rule of law. And this is exactly what is confirmed by the activation of the Organized Crime Department, which I had the opportunity to visit on Wednesday. In less than half a year, it has solved 272 cases of serious organized crime, dismantled 51 criminal organizations, and made at least 720 arrests.”
