During his acceptance speech, Mitsotakis echoed Meloni’s stance on balancing national security with social liberalism, stating, “One can be a true patriot by focusing on a strong defence and border protection while at the same time being socially liberal, providing high-quality public goods, and reducing inequality.” His comments were seen as flattering towards Meloni, whose far-right policies have sparked controversy across Europe.

The award was presented to Mitsotakis by Albert Bourla, CEO of Pfizer, who expressed admiration for the Greek Prime Minister, calling him “a visionary champion of a new era of economic prosperity, a leader dedicated to his country who won the trust of the Greek people.” Bourla highlighted Mitsotakis’ re-election as proof that he keeps his political promises and commands respect among world leaders.

Accepting the award, Mitsotakis dedicated it to the Greek people, acknowledging their resilience and perseverance in recent years. “This award belongs to all Greeks,” he said, attributing the nation’s success to its ability to “govern from the political centre” and maintain fiscal responsibility while promoting development.

In his speech, Mitsotakis reiterated Meloni’s approach to governance, emphasising that patriotism can coexist with social liberalism. He addressed his government’s re-election as a response to how populism can be challenged, acknowledging that the grievances driving people towards populist movements are real. “Whether related to income inequality, issues of identity, or the consequences of globalisation – these are real grievances, and we need to be very careful in addressing them,” he stated, urging leaders not to dismiss the concerns of ordinary people.

“Our government focuses on policy, not politics,” Mitsotakis added. “It is our responsibility as leaders to find solutions, and we will be judged by how much we have improved the lives of our citizens.” He further emphasised Greece’s role as a “steadfast ally of the US and a pillar of security and stability in a turbulent region,” referring to the nation’s stance on Greek-Turkish relations.

The Prime Minister concluded his address with a quote from former European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, whom he “deeply respects.” Citing Juncker’s words about the challenge of re-election when doing the right thing, Mitsotakis remarked, “If there is a lesson from Greek history, it is that my good friend was wrong. We were re-elected by doing exactly what was right, and the Greek people rewarded us for it.”

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was presented with her award by billionaire Elon Musk, who was also in attendance at the event.
