According to a report by the Efimerida ton Syntaktoni newspaper, the incident occurred on Monday afternoon near the city of Katerini. Train 2591, operating a suburban route between Thessaloniki and Larissa, came to a halt due to a mechanical failure at Korinos station. Despite the stoppage, the station’s traffic light system reportedly malfunctioned, continuing to display a green signal. This led to Intercity train 57, en route from Thessaloniki to Athens, proceeding at high speed toward the stationary train.

The potential collision was narrowly avoided after the drivers of both trains communicated via mobile phone.

In its announcement, OSE stated:

“Regarding reports of a near-collision of trains in Pieria, both OSE and ERGOSE, in collaboration with the manufacturer of the signalling ystem, are carefully examining all relevant information to fully investigate the incident.”

OSE added that signalling and remote control systems have been operational in this section of the railway network since August 2023, with all necessary safety certifications issued according to regulatory requirements. The system also holds a safe operation certificate provided by the Hellenic Railways Regulatory Authority (RAS).

“Given the internationally guaranteed safe operation of trains through signalling and remote control systems, OSE, ERGOSE, and the manufacturing company are conducting all required technical inspections in line with system manuals to determine the exact causes of the reported incident,” the statement concluded.
