Triantopoulos, who represents the central Greek constituency of Magnesia, said he had informed Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of his decision. He argued that the demands of the forthcoming judicial proceedings could not be reconciled with an election campaign.
The Judicial Council referred Triantopoulos to trial for the misdemeanour offence of breach of duty in connection with actions taken at the crash site after the collision. He denies responsibility for the alteration of the site and says he will contest the case before the Special Court.
In a statement, Triantopoulos said he disagreed with the Judicial Council’s decision and remained convinced of his innocence. He also rejected accusations surrounding his handling of the aftermath of the disaster, describing the case against him as politically exploited.
He said he would remain an MP until the end of the current parliamentary term, but would not appear on New Democracy’s candidate list in Magnesia at the next national election.
Triantopoulos was first elected in Magnesia in 2023 with 21,492 preference votes. He said he would continue supporting New Democracy and Mitsotakis ahead of the next election while focusing on the proceedings before the Special Court.
