In a statement issued during the court proceedings, the party leader charged that New Democracy intervened in and manipulated the parliamentary investigative committee examining the subsidies and surveillance scandals. He said new details revealed in the trial suggested witnesses had been coached in advance — that some committee questions and the ‘correct’ answers were known to those summoned — and that the subjects under investigation had prior notice of when and where checks by competent authorities would be carried out.

‘This government will be recorded as the government that produces scandals, while simultaneously trying to cover them up,’ the New Left president said. He announced he would seek a formal meeting with the speaker of parliament to request specific measures intended to restore the authority of the legislature and the credibility of investigative committees.

The statement closed with an appeal to left and progressive forces to defend the constitution, the rule of law and democratic institutions, and to work to end what the party described as the impunity of powerful interests so as to rebuild public trust in the state.
