The provision is being implemented for the first time and applies to those born between 1 January and 15 May 2008.
Under the new rules, conscripts called up with the third 2026 ESSO may be permanently discharged after completing nine months of actual military service.
The provision is set out in Article 246 of Law 5265/2026, which establishes the new framework governing military conscription in Greece.
Those with a full military service obligation who enlist with the initial call-up of their age group and complete their entire obligation without receiving a deferment are entitled to the nine-month term.
Different provisions apply to those who wish to continue their studies.
Those called up with the third 2026 ESSO who intend to study at a higher education institution may request a deferment from enlistment as prospective students, in accordance with Article 188 of Law 5265/2026.
A significant change is that applicants are no longer required to have already enrolled at the institution. To obtain the deferment, it is sufficient to submit the required documentation demonstrating that they are entitled to take part in the relevant admission or enrolment process.
