The report highlights that Greece has the highest proportion of citizens struggling to make ends meet after Mexico, Slovakia, and Turkey, with over 65% of Greeks facing financial hardship—a figure that has risen since 2010 but has shown slight improvement compared to 2019.
Greek citizens also report low life satisfaction, with the country ranking fourth from the bottom among OECD members in 2023. However, Greece saw one of the largest improvements in life satisfaction from 2019 to 2023, recording the fourth highest increase in this metric among the surveyed countries.
Economic indicators show mounting challenges: public debt has climbed from 94% of GDP in 2010 to 134% in 2023, while per capita investment has dropped significantly from $97,000 to $78,000 in Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) terms.
In terms of environmental performance, Greece is in the middle range of OECD countries. Per capita carbon emissions have fallen from 10,700 to 7,300 tonnes, and the share of renewable energy in the country’s energy mix has more than doubled, rising from 8.6% in 2010 to 16.6%. However, Greece has seen an increase in endangered animal species, signalling a deterioration in biodiversity.
