One dead, another critically injured in Motor Oil refinery explosion
The two workers, aged 43 and 50, were initially taken to Corinth General Hospital, where they were intubated before being transferred to Thriasio Hospital, which has a specialist burns unit.
This was the second fatal workplace accident reported in Greece on Friday, following the death of a 49-year-old worker who fell from scaffolding in Serres earlier that day.
Thriasio Hospital’s statement
The management of Thriasio General Hospital issued a statement confirming the worker’s death:
‘Today, Friday 9 October 2026, at approximately 2pm, two seriously injured workers, members of a crew carrying out work at Motor Oil’s facilities, were transferred to Thriasio General Hospital in Elefsina.
‘Both workers arrived already intubated and immediately received treatment from the hospital’s medical and nursing staff, who took all appropriate measures to address their condition.
‘Despite the efforts of medical staff, one of the two injured workers died at 4.48pm.
‘The second worker, who has sustained severe head injuries, is being treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU).
‘The management and staff of Thriasio General Hospital extend their sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.’
Contractor taken to police station
The two workers were employed by an external contractor and were carrying out maintenance work at the refinery’s facilities.
The contractor responsible for the crew was taken to the Agioi Theodoroi police station.
According to reports, a prosecutor ordered the contractor’s arrest, while police officers were dispatched to both the company’s facilities and the hospital.
