The man faced charges of dangerous bodily harm, abduction, rape, and a weapons law violation. Judicial sources explained the decision to release him by citing the absence of the woman’s testimony, despite police reports confirming that she had identified him. Also, the DIAS motorcycle riding squad team officers found her handcuffed with visible signs of abuse.
The incident began on Monday when DIAS team officers heard a woman’s cries for help. They found the victim tied by her hands and feet, severely abused. The subsequent investigation revealed that the perpetrator had been arrested just hours earlier for another crime.
The victim, a 33-year-old woman, had suffered a stab wound to her left thigh. After being rescued, she recounted her ordeal to the DIAS team, describing how the 27-year-old had lured her to the abandoned building, beaten her, and forced her into sexual acts. She lost consciousness during the assault and only regained it when she began calling for help, at which point she was found by the police. She was initially taken to “Gennimatas” hospital and later transferred to “Sotiria”.
The same day, the suspect was arrested during a routine check, found in possession of a 23 cm knife with blood stains. He was taken to the Omonia police station.
According to the Athens News Agency, the victim identified the 27-year-old at the police station.
The decision to release the offender has caused significant public anger and frustration.
