“We all agree that the climate crisis is here, and we will continue to face these kinds of phenomena,” Glavinas said. “However, we must examine whether the government is truly managing the situation effectively. The data on the extent of burned areas in recent years suggests a collective failure.”

Glavinas specifically criticised the government’s tendency toward what he described as “PR management” highlighting the timing of an emergency meeting scheduled by the Prime Minister. He also underscored the importance of swift and adequate compensation for those affected, noting that many victims of previous disasters, such as the Daniel flood, have yet to receive any financial support.

On the issue of prevention, Glavinas argued that while some efforts have been made, they are insufficient. He called for increased investment in aerial firefighting resources, updated civil protection plans, and more robust involvement from the forest service. He also advocated for the employment of seasonal firefighters throughout the year to focus on preventive measures, echoing the saying, “fires are put out in winter, not in summer.”

Glavinas further criticised the government’s coordination during the recent fire in northeastern Attica, suggesting that there were significant lapses in management. He urged the government to move beyond “photo opportunities” with firefighters and firefighting aircraft, and instead focus on substantive improvements in wildfire management and prevention.
