PASOK on Tempe case: Government’s attempted cover-up unravelling as new evidence emerges

PASOK has launched a fierce attack on the government, accusing it of orchestrating a cover-up over the Tempe train disaster and declaring that the more the case progresses, the clearer the extent of concealment and deception becomes.
In a joint statement, Evangelia Liakouli, head of PASOK’s Justice, Institutions and Transparency committee, and Christos Kaklamanis, Secretary of the Justice Sector, highlight that as early as November 2024, delays and missing CCTV footage from the investigation into the cargo contents of the commercial train had raised concerns.
“The veil of cover-up that the government struggled to impose on the Tempe crime is slowly being lifted, revealing new shocking testimonies, irrefutable evidence, and the agonising cries of victims’ families that continue to shake the entire Greek nation,” they state.
They also reference a now-infamous exchange from the night of the tragedy—one of the last desperate conversations between passengers:
“‘Martha, I love you’—followed moments later by ‘Can you hear me?’—will forever haunt the collective conscience of citizens and, above all, those responsible. The fact that this evidence is only coming to light almost two years after the tragedy is unforgivable.”
PASOK demands full accountability
The PASOK officials stress that justice must be served for the 57 victims and dozens of injured, pledging to continue their efforts until full clarity is achieved.
“For the broken voices, for the last tender words of young people who should have had their whole lives ahead of them, we will not stop fighting. Justice must prevail. The fundamental principles of the Rule of Law must be restored in a country that has become a political fiefdom.”
PASOK demands answers from the government on several key issues, including:
- The alleged role of the State Chemical Laboratory in covering up crucial evidence regarding the cargo of the commercial train.
- The suspicious timing of new legislation on a Forensic Medicine Committee, set to be introduced in Parliament on Thursday, which could influence forensic reports related to the case.
“A State that does not conceal evidence, does not delay justice, does not attempt to let crimes expire under statutes of limitations, and does not shield ministers, officials, and administrators—that is what we demand. We remain on the front lines. We will not allow this crime to be buried under government manoeuvres and legal loopholes. The people demand justice—and so do we.” they state.
