More than 500 steps connect the old port of Fira with the town above, with many tourists choosing to make the climb on mules and donkeys. According to PETA, handlers routinely use whips to drive the animals, which show signs of exhaustion and apathy while carrying people of all weights in high temperatures.
‘Shaded areas are scarce, as are water troughs. Many animals bear scars from injuries,’ the organisation said.
PETA also said that activists were attacked by animal handlers during a protest held by the organisation on 4 September.
The group is calling on the municipality and the Greek government to put an end to ‘donkey taxis’, while urging travellers to use animal-friendly alternatives such as the cable car alongside the Karavolades steps.
‘Recent images show that, despite years of criticism, little has changed for the animals,’ said biologist Dr Yvonne Würz, PETA’s specialist adviser, calling for an end to donkey rides.
