PM sharpens tone on Tempe case, blames opposition for populist rhetoric and using the tragedy for political gain

"As many openly question the integrity of the justice system, I have a double responsibility to shield its functions. This extends to the broader protection of our democracy." Kyriakos Mitsotakis remarked during his interview with Kathimerini newspaper.
He went on to address the latest developments in the case, pointing out that the judicial experts who have been investigating from the start have concluded that there were no tanks of flammable cargo aboard the freight train. “What’s left is the final confirmation of the video footage by the Greek police. Should their authenticity be verified, then the entire theory of an ‘illegal cargo’—and the accusations of a ‘cover-up’—will be definitively disproven,” the PM emphasised.
Mitsotakis then spoke about the “use of the Tempe tragedy for political gain” in relation to the involvement of the former Parliament Speaker, Konstantinos Tasoulas, and stressed that “our country needs truth and seriousness.”
“When institutions are called into question—whether it’s Parliament, the Justice, or the President of the Republic—real dangers arise. This erodes rules and boundaries, plunging society into a ‘social jungle.’ And we know all too well that it is the most vulnerable who suffer first, as the law of the strongest prevails.”
He accused the opposition of indulging in “blind protest,” which, according to him, has turned into a “deafening, aimless outcry.”
