"Political refugee and member of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika, Abdurrahman Kaykan (Apo), is being held at the Attica Foreigners' Division following an order from the Turkish state to Interpol for his extradition back to Turkey. Our comrade, who has been living in Greece for ten years, was detained this morning, 26/2, after submitting a residence permit renewal application. Tomorrow, he will appear before the Prosecutor's Office, where it will be decided whether he will remain in detention or be released until a decision is made regarding his extradition to Turkey," denounces the Assembly of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika.
“The fascist Turkish state does not cease its persecution of political refugees, regardless of how many years pass. In collaboration with so-called ‘democratic’ states like Greece, it relentlessly targets any oppositional voice or anti-fascist action.”
“Political refugees come to Greece precisely to escape such persecution for their beliefs and political activities. Those who are persecuted in Turkey, in an effort to avoid imprisonment and extreme torture, migrate to the liberal democracies in the West seeking political asylum.”
“Even when they manage to reach their destination and a small number of them are granted asylum, they continue to live under a state of captivity, subjected to both state and para-state terror—affecting not only them but also their families.”
The statement goes on to say:
“It seems paradoxical and utterly absurd that someone recognised for years by the Greek state and the European Union as a political refugee—granted asylum due to a clear and proven threat to their life—should now face extradition for the very reasons that led to their asylum being granted. However, this seemingly irrational situation, which is increasingly frequent in Greece and across EU countries, is in fact a stark demonstration of the systematic political elimination of activists, of all voices and actions opposing fascism. It also highlights the complete disregard for international law and the supposed protection of human rights.”
“WE CALL ON ALL THOSE IN SOLIDARITY TO GATHER ON THURSDAY 27/2, AT 10:00 AM, AT THE ATHENS COURT OF APPEAL (LOUKAREOS STREET)
- AGAINST INTERSTATE ALLIANCES
- END ALL COLLABORATION WITH ERDOĞAN’S FASCIST REGIME
- IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF OUR COMRADE APO
- STOP PERSECUTION OF POLITICAL REFUGEES“
