ELEFTHEROTYPIABill allowing rampant coastal development may be the saving grace of Hellinikon The outcry over the Greek shoreline may also save Athens The cocktail of measures cooked up by the Ministry of Finance with its focus on revenue and characteristic arrogance, that would allow major developments on, and privatizations of, Greek beaches and the coastline may prove to be a bomb with a slow-burning fuse for the government. In the attempts of some to serve the interest of potential investors in large coastal developments a ‘recipe’ was created which has provoked explosive protests, particularly among the young – but also among government MPs – which threaten even the much trumpeted investment of the Latsis Group-controlled Lamda Development in the site of the former airport at Hellinikon. The government is attempted to rally the support of MPs, stressing that the building up of coastal areas serves primarily the ‘renovation of Hellinikon’ and is attempting to win perceptions regarding the restriction of the public’s right to access beaches by announcing that only 50% of the beaches to be privatized will be put up for auction. |
