The meeting comes after Androulakis called for immediate information on the government’s priorities and stance as tensions escalate in the region.

‘The Middle East is on fire again. The rapid developments and the looming prospect of further escalation create intense concern,’ Androulakis said in his request for a briefing.

He asked the prime minister to inform political leaders about Greece’s position regarding developments in the wider Middle East and eastern Mediterranean.

Debate over broader political consultation

Opposition parties have called for a broader briefing on the country’s stance, with some requesting the convening of a council of political leaders to establish a common national line.

However, Mitsotakis has not responded to a request from SYRIZA leader Socrates Famellos to convene such a council. Instead, he has indicated that he is willing to meet political leaders individually upon request.

According to government sources, the prime minister is expected to address parliament on Wednesday during the debate on a bill concerning postal voting for Greek citizens abroad, where he is also likely to refer to international developments.

Extraordinary meeting of foreign policy council

At the same time, foreign minister George Gerapetritis has convened an extraordinary meeting of the National Council for Foreign Policy to discuss the latest developments in the Middle East.

The foreign minister is also continuing regular briefings to the parliamentary Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs on issues related to Greece’s foreign policy.
