Antonis Eleftherianos, the head of the Athens Prosecutor’s Office, ordered a preliminary inquiry to determine whether the incident constitutes a case of “dangerous interference in the transport of fixed orbit vehicles,” a criminal offence under Greek law.
The investigation, which will be conducted by the Hellenic Police under the supervision of the Prosecutor’s Office, will involve reviewing audio recordings from the incident and gathering witness statements. Authorities are focussing on potential errors or mismanagement in the rail system’s operation that could have led to the near-collision, which has raised serious concerns about the safety and oversight of Greece’s railways.
