Prosecutor launches urgent investigation into Thessaloniki Metro shutdown
The White Tower Police Department has been tasked with the inquiry, which was authorised following a request from the Thessaloniki Appeals Prosecutor’s Office. Authorities are investigating potential offences of dangerous interference with fixed-track transportation and exposure.
As part of the investigation, prosecutors have sought answers to key questions, including:
- Why the Metro was shut down and why operations did not resume promptly.
- Whether the evacuation of passengers via the tunnel’s pedestrian walkways was conducted safely.
- Whether the relevant safety protocols for such incidents were adhered to.
- Whether the train attendants involved in the evacuation had received adequate training, particularly in assisting individuals with mobility challenges or those using wheelchairs.
This is one amongst several incidents that have drawn significant public attention, with concerns raised about the Metro system’s preparedness and safety standards in emergencies.
