In the aftermath of the Brexit vote, European Parliament president Martin Schulz took the opportunity to call for an EU-wide referendum on a “genuine European government”, with ministers acting as legislator alongside MEPs.

According to Mr. Schulz, this would make the political process of the EU more transparent and increase accountability of the European bodies. Therefore, citizen’s discontent would be dealt with in an efficient way.

Mr. Schulz also argued that this is not a question of whether we will have “more Europe” rather than clarifying what citizens can expect from the EU regarding various aspects. The Union should not intervene in matters that can be regulated on a local level but focus on those issues that require joint actions, he stated.

The 27 heads of state and government will meet in Bratislava on 16 September for an informal discussion over the future of the EU.
