In their statement, they recalled that Deputy Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Evangelos Tournas had described legislation governing five-year contract firefighters as a ‘disaster’ only days earlier.
‘Today, a five-year contract firefighter is dead for his country,’ they said.
They also recalled that, two years ago, the same minister had described seasonal firefighters as ‘invaders’ when they protested against their dismissal.
The seasonal firefighters accused the government of hypocrisy, declaring that ‘your statements are unnecessary’ in response to an announcement issued by New Democracy.
Their intervention comes as widespread wildfires place severe pressure on the country and once again expose the Fire Service’s longstanding problems.
