As the fires in Attica rage on, seasonal firefighters—who have been on duty since October 31—have taken to social media to voice their frustration and exhaustion. Through their posts, they’ve kept the public informed about the fire’s progression, thanked volunteers and citizens for their support, and made a heartfelt appeal to the state, asking for even the most basic necessity—a glass of water.

In a poignant post shared today, the firefighters highlighted the dire conditions they’re facing on the front lines:

“It seems that in order to get a drink of water during this fire, we have to post on Facebook and hope that the fear of publicity will spur someone into action,” they wrote. “It’s now 5 in the afternoon. The last time water and food were distributed to firefighters was last night at 9. And this is happening in the capital of the country, where all the ‘responsible’ authorities are supposedly gathered.”

The post ends on a note of bitter irony: “Thank you for having us for the third day—don’t forget to tell the channels how much you appreciate us.”
