Residents of Kalloni and neighbouring villages spent a difficult night as heavy rainfall caused extensive flooding and damage across western Lesvos. Roads turned into torrents, sweeping away vehicles, while dozens of homes and businesses were inundated in Skala Kallonis and surrounding areas.
According to residents, the Tsiknias River overflowed its banks, sending huge volumes of water into Kalloni. In several places the water level exceeded half a metre, submerging roads, courtyards and parked cars.
Traffic was disrupted on several parts of the local road network, particularly between Kalloni and Skala Kalloni, and between Arisvi and Agia Paraskevi, where the road surface was transformed into a river. Many vehicles were immobilised, and some drivers were forced to abandon their cars.
Residents reported that floodwater entered houses and shops, damaging electrical appliances, storage spaces and goods. Damage has also been recorded on provincial and rural roads, while there were incidents of cars being swept away by the rushing water.
Fifteen Fire Service vehicles have been deployed to pump out water and assist residents, while local authorities remain on alert to restore traffic and assess the extent of the damage.
The Civil Protection service of the Municipality of West Lesvos urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and not to attempt to cross flooded roads due to the high risk of entrapment.
By order of the mayor of West Lesvos, all schools in the area remain closed today for the safety of pupils and teachers.
