In putting together this feature, we turned to individuals who have been following the crisis in Greece and have written about it, and not solely from a journalistic perspective. We sought the opinions of distinguished specialists in a number of fields in the hopes of generating a debate that would more comprehensively pose the question of what the crisis has meant for Greece over these last eight years. What are the lessons that we can we take from it? What are the mistakes that we made during its course, and which might somehow explain the overwhelming defeat of the anti-bailout front at this stage?
One thread that runs throughout these pieces is reflectiveness on how we have spoken about the crisis. Where are the blind spots in the public discourse? What do we think about, using which tools, and with what implications?
The feature is bilingual, and will continue to be expanded in coming weeks.
Special Feature: End of the Bailout Programmes
On August 20, Greece is set to complete its final “support programme” or, as it has been more commonly known throughout the crisis, its last “bailout”. The fatalities from the recent wildfire in Mati have left little room for celebration, but it is clear that Greece’s government had hoped to generate a sense of euphoria around the event. And while the national mood has changed and the phrase ‘clean exit’ isn’t so easy to hear anymore, the government’s rhetoric still aims to create an image of the nation’s clear transition to another, post-bailout, reality.
