According to the German publication, the BND was listening in the telephone communications of the Ministries of Interior of USA, Denmark, Croatia, Austria, and Poland as well as American talks made in Brussels, the UN and New York. Another one of the targets was the American treasury in Washington.
Even the “hotline” of the US Ministry of Foreign Affairs, concerning travel advisories was in BND's list. The service was not only interested in foreign countries but also spied on NGOs such as Care International, Oxfam, and the red Cross in Switzerland.
The Spiegel states that “Many foreign embassies and consulates are in BND's list, the service has been following electronic communications, faxes and phone calls of the USA, France, UK, Sweden, Portugal, Greece, Spain, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, even the Vatican”
