In Imathia, a young student was struck by a passing train while attempting to cross the tracks to reach his school on the other side of the road.
According to Voria.gr, the student tried to cross the tracks and leaned forward to check if a train was approaching. The train had just departed from the station, and the driver had not yet picked up speed. He had also sounded the departure horn.
The train then hit the student on the head, causing him to fall. It came to a halt, and emergency services rushed the 17-year-old to the Alexandria Health Centre before transferring him to Veria Hospital.
As reported by Thesstoday.gr, scans carried out on the student were clear, ruling out any internal injuries from the blow to his head. However, he did suffer a minor fracture at the base of his skull, which is not considered a cause for concern.
According to Voria.gr, both local residents and students of the school have long been calling for the construction of a footbridge. This would allow them to reach their school safely without having to cross the railway tracks, reducing the risk of tragic accidents.
