Speaking to SKAI, Terezakis said the incident occurred at 6:51 am on train 1302.

“During the reporting of the incident, a strong odour of burning material was detected in the second carriage. The driver stopped at Liosia, isolated the air conditioning unit from which the smell was coming, moved passengers to the rear carriages, and continued the journey,” he said.

Terezakis stressed that responsibility for the carriages and their maintenance lies with Hellenic Train. He acknowledged that such incidents have occurred before, adding that problems with rolling stock and infrastructure are a consequence of long-term underfunding and staff shortages.

“A system that has been underfunded and understaffed for the last 15 years is bound to develop problems, no matter how diligent it may be,” he said.
