Surveillance cameras at National Technical University of Athens: Concerns over personal data handling

Following the installation of CCTV cameras at the NTUA campuses in Patission and Zografou, three organisations – Vouliwatch, Reporters United, and Homo Digitalis – are demanding that the National Technical University of Athens demonstrate compliance with data protection laws. At the same time, 61 architecture students have submitted a related request, as questions arise over how video recordings and personal data are being handled and safeguarded.
The three organisations have formally requested documents from NTUA to determine whether the university is adhering to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and relevant Greek legislation. They are seeking access to all documentation related to the installation and operation of the CCTV systems on university premises, including any safeguards in place to protect individuals’ personal data.
In particular, they want to know who is being recorded, where the footage is stored, and what measures ensure transparency and accountability. They also ask whether the university is complying with GDPR articles 12, 13, 35, and 36, which relate to informing data subjects, conducting data protection impact assessments, and consulting with data protection authorities when required.
The organisations point out that NTUA has so far failed to respond to student and staff requests for information about how their personal data is being processed. Meanwhile, 61 students from the School of Architecture have formally supported the call for transparency, working in coordination with the three groups.
It’s worth noting that the university installed the cameras in March at both the Zografou campus and the Patission complex, reportedly without informing students or staff about its data processing policies.
