SYRIZA adds that this position is consistent with a government linked to the OPEKEPE scandal, accused of inaction over sheep and goat pox, of strengthening cartels in the agri-food sector and of tolerating profiteering at the expense of both producers and consumers.
The party describes the EU–MERCOSUR agreement as “unfair and dangerous”, raising concerns about the exploitation of farmers in Europe and workers in Latin America, as well as environmental harm and risks to food safety. It stresses that the two sides do not adhere to equivalent standards, citing the use of pesticides banned in the EU, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms and lower animal welfare requirements.
SYRIZA argues that the wave of agricultural mobilisations across Europe is no coincidence, describing the agreement as one that benefits multinationals while damaging producers and local communities. The statement concludes that farmers and consumers need fair trade agreements that safeguard food security and respect the climate crisis, adding sharply that “the Mitsotakis government is consciously committing crimes against the primary sector”.
