In a statement, the party says farmers are facing livestock losses and a collapse in income, with knock-on effects on local economies. It argues that, rather than taking responsibility, the government has focused on communication-driven meetings at the Maximos Mansion and broad announcements, while shifting responsibility to farmers and regional authorities.

SYRIZA claims public veterinary services have been left understaffed and disorganised, that timely and effective checks were not carried out, that illegal movements of animals were not prevented, and that compensation and support measures have been inadequate. It also says no comprehensive national plan has been presented for the prevention, surveillance and management of zoonotic disease, leaving the country ‘institutionally unfortified’.

The party describes this as a political choice, accusing the government of treating the primary sector as a cost rather than a strategic pillar of the economy.

SYRIZA is demanding:

  • 100 per cent compensation for losses, immediately and without delay, with a binding payment timetable. It says compensation should cover not only lost animals but also lost income, feed costs, quarantine-related operating expenses, and the cost of rebuilding herds.

  • Strengthening of public veterinary services, including permanent recruitment and modern diagnostic tools.

  • Stricter controls and full traceability across all stages of production.

  • A clear, scientifically documented plan to tackle the disease and reconstitute livestock.

  • Full transparency on scientific committee recommendations and correspondence with the European Commission, including clarity on vaccination.

The party warns that if the government does not present a timely and effective plan, it will bear ‘full political responsibility’ for the sector’s collapse, adding that relevant ministers should resign. It argues the issue goes beyond farmers, affecting food security, prices, food quality and the national interest.
