“The government must stop pandering to reactionary voices and immediately legalise the term ‘femicide,’ strengthen support structures for victims of domestic violence, and take all necessary steps to ensure women in our society feel free, strong, and equal,” SYRIZA said.

The statement, titled “One less. Why?”, reflects the party’s frustration at what it describes as the state’s inadequate response to the crisis. “The horrific murder of yet another woman proves that the state must finally take the issue of femicide seriously,” it reads.

SYRIZA has called for swift legislative and policy changes, including enshrining femicide as a legal term, enhancing support mechanisms for domestic violence victims, and implementing measures to foster equality and safety for women.

The party added that it has already submitted multiple proposals in this direction, stating: “A little courage is needed to hope for an end to this shameful phenomenon, this black stain on our social fabric.”
