SYRIZA leader: ‘Shameful for the country and democracy that Mitsotakis takes revenge on Tempe victim father’
‘Mr Mitsotakis was disturbed by the honest struggle of Mr Routsi, who wanted to find the truth about the loss of his child, and took revenge on society by banning demonstrations and gatherings outside Parliament,’ Famellos said in a statement issued immediately after the vote.
Famellos went on to link the amendment to broader failures of the government. ‘Today’s decision is offensive to the republic,’ he said, arguing that the prime minister was trying to conceal Greece’s deeper problems of profiteering and corruption, for which he holds the government responsible.
He cited the unfolding OPEKEPE revelations (OPEKEPE administers agricultural subsidy schemes) and recent reports that a New Democracy executive allegedly received €2.5 million in subsidies and eight cars, including a luxury vehicle. ‘This Greece does not deserve us,’ Famellos said. ‘We do not deserve to be a Greece in which the European Public Prosecutor’s Office refers to the OPEKEPE case as a criminal organisation.’
Concluding his statement, Famellos demanded a change of government. ‘We need a progressive Greece, which Mr Mitsotakis obviously cannot guarantee. That is why this government must leave as soon as possible and we must have a progressive government.’
